MIMOS was pleased to host the brilliant Prof Dr. Rui Dinis, Senior Member, IEEE; an associate professor FCT-UNL, and a Researcher, Instituto de Telecomunicações, Aveiro, Portugal, during the latest edition of Tech Café. His topic was “A Look Beyond Massive MIMO: Working with a Huge Number of Antennas”.
Prof Dr. Rui’s main research interests include signal processing techniques for wireless communications, including modulations, MIMO systems, equalisation and multi-user detection, channel estimation and synchronisation, and positioning techniques.
The session revolved around the potential of MIMO and massive MIMO systems to increase data rates and reduce bit error rates, while also discussing the challenges of optimising wireless communication systems for spectral efficiency. Prof Dr. Rui highlighted the importance of achieving high spectral efficiency while considering power efficiency, environmental concerns, and the complexity of the wireless channel. He also discussed the need for lower complexity in massive MIMO systems and introduced a multi-layer approach for low-complexity detection, which can be applied to any constellation.
