The MBI is a national initiative spearheaded by MIMOS Berhad to catalyse Malaysia’s digital advancement by fostering digital integration in a neutral, trusted and unified blockchain infrastructure.

The main goal is to drive cross-blockchain innovative applications, enhance security and transparency, promote an inclusive digital economy, trade facilitation, government services, and increase blockchain accessibility across various sectors in Malaysia.

MIMOS Berhad, Malaysia’s national applied research and development centre, spearheads the MBI initiative aligned with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (MOSTI) National Blockchain Roadmap 2021-2025, in support of the Government Digital Asset initiative. Malaysia aims to become the regional blockchain hub by driving secure, scalable, and innovative adoption across multiple industries, establishing digital trust via blockchain, ensuring system interoperability, promoting adoption, trade facilitation, government services, and complying with national and global regulations.

The MBI is trying to solve critical challenges in the blockchain space by providing a shared platform for ordinary users, developers, blockchain and infrastructure providers that enhances interoperability and reusability of blockchain components, thereby preventing fragmented, isolated solutions. It ensures privacy and data confidentiality through advanced mechanisms like zero-knowledge proofs, supports digital identity management, and offers scalable infrastructure to overcome technical and resource limitations.

Additionally, MBI facilitates regulatory compliance and governance frameworks, promotes collaboration among government, industry, and academia, and targets strategic sectors such as trade facilitation and government services to improve transparency, efficiency, and trust in digital transactions. These efforts collectively aim to create a cohesive, secure, scalable blockchain ecosystem in Malaysia.

MBI wants to make blockchain tech easier for everyone in Malaysia to use. This is by getting different groups to work together, creating a place to help blockchain ideas grow, teaching people how to use the tech, and ensuring clear rules. This way, more people can get involved and use blockchain.

MBI’s significance to the nation lies in its role as a key component of the ‘amplifier’ within the national blockchain ecosystem. It is a foundational infrastructure to support government-led blockchain projects, particularly in trade facilitation and government services.
