Celebrating MIMOS’ Women Tech Leaders & Researchers: Dr. Nur Amierah Mohd Asib

Dr. Nur Amierah Mohd Asib, a respected Senior Engineer at MIMOS Berhad, is widely recognised for her expertise in nanomaterials, advanced materials characterisation, and electron microscopy. She utilises cutting-edge analytical tools such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Dual Beam systems, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) to perform detailed failure analyses, encompassing physical and material analysis across various industries.

With her extensive experience operating and managing advanced microscopy techniques like Dual Beam systems, including Focused Ion Beam (FIB) cut analysis and lamella preparation, Dr. Nur Amierah has significantly contributed to the electronics and electrical (E&E) industries field as a Senior Engineer in the Material Analysis Laboratory at MIMOS. Dr. Nur Amierah’s skills involve manipulating matter at the atomic and molecular scale, specialising in the characterisation of nanomaterials, such as quantum dots nanoparticles, graphene and metal oxide nanowires (e.g., zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂)), using advanced techniques like the TEM.

Currently, Dr. Amierah leads the TEM team, overseeing instrument operations and team management to deliver advanced services to MIMOS, the E&E industries, and universities. Dr. Amierah is also a trainer in the Failure Analysis Training Programme, specialising in TEM and Dual Beam equipment. She has played a vital role in procuring an advanced UHR Dual Beam System-Plasma FIB for Level 4 Advanced Analysis infrastructure under the RMK12 funding.

Dr. Nur Amierah’s failure analysis services offer clients a deep understanding of material defects and their root causes through utilising advanced TEM equipment. The high-resolution imaging, crystallographic analysis through Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), and elemental composition analysis using Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) help examine material defects, identify root causes of failures, and perform detailed structural at the micro and nanoscale, supporting industries in semiconductors, materials science, manufacturing, as well as universities. Results from the analyses help companies identify and address issues that can lead to product failures.

Dr. Nur Amierah’s collaboration with universities has contributed to advancing research in nanotechnology and materials science. The Failure Analysis laboratory supports academic research to validate hypotheses, enhance the accuracy of experimental data, and accelerate the development of new materials and technologies. Partnering with universities fosters innovation, supports academic publications, and strengthens the research ecosystem, ultimately contributing to scientific advancements that benefit society and drive future technological developments. Her expertise and resources have been invaluable to researchers seeking to understand the properties and behaviour of materials at the nanoscale.

Dr. Nur Amierah’s plans include expanding her capabilities and services at MIMOS’ Failure Analysis laboratory. She aims to integrate even more advanced technologies, such as the 300kV TEM, to address increasingly complex materials challenges. Additionally, she plans to further collaborate with industries and academic institutions to provide tailored solutions and support cutting-edge research in emerging fields.

Dr. Nur Amierah Mohd Asib’s passion for nanotechnology and her dedication to excellence have positioned her as a leading figure in the field. Her contributions to materials characterisation, failure analysis, and industry collaboration have made a significant impact. As she continues to drive innovation and advance technological progress, Dr. Nur Amierah’s expertise will undoubtedly benefit both industry and society.
