Data Centre Senior Engineer

Job Purpose

The Data Center Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and management of an organization’s data center infrastructure. This role ensures the efficient, secure, and reliable operation of servers, networking equipment, power, and cooling systems within the data center. The engineer will work closely with other IT teams, manage vendor relationships, and oversee physical and logical security protocols.

Key Responsibilities

Data Center Operations:

  • Monitor and manage daily operations of data center systems, including servers, storage, networking equipment, and environmental controls (power, cooling, etc.).
  • Perform routine maintenance and system updates to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues related to data center infrastructure.

Infrastructure Management:

  • Monitor data center hardware, including servers, routers, switches, and other critical infrastructure components.
  • Oversee cabling and wiring for power and network connectivity within the data center.
  • Manage and update data center inventories, including tracking hardware assets and software licenses.

Security and Compliance:

  • Implement and enforce physical and logical security measures to protect data center assets and sensitive information.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and organizational policies related to data storage, access control, and data protection.
  • Manage access control for vendors and visitors to the data center, including maintaining logs and conducting security briefings.

Vendor and Stakeholder Management:

  • Coordinate with vendors for the procurement, installation, and maintenance of data center equipment.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for data center vendors and manage relationships to ensure the highest level of service and support.

Disaster Recovery and Backup:

  • Involve in disaster recovery plans and procedures to ensure business continuity in case of data center failures.
  • Monitor and test backup systems to ensure data integrity and availability in the event of a disaster.

Capacity Planning and Optimization:

  • Analyze current data center capacity and forecast future needs to ensure the infrastructure can scale with organizational growth.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, efficiency improvements, and system optimizations within the data center.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed documentation of data center configurations, procedures, and changes.
  • Generate reports on data center performance, capacity utilization, and incidents for management review.

Professional Qualification 

Any relevant certifications or as below are advantages :

  • Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Server+, and VMware Certified Professional) are preferred.

Relevant Work Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in data center operations, network administration, or systems engineering.
  • The position requires working in a data center environment, which may involve lifting heavy equipment and working in controlled temperatures.

Competencies/Skills

Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of data center infrastructure, including servers, storage, networking, and cooling systems.
  • Proficiency in system monitoring tools and techniques.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Solid understanding of data center security protocols and compliance requirements.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Effective communication and vendor management skills.

Travel Requirements

  • Travelling to DRC site as needed.
  • Travelling to other agencies as needed.
